The process of creating the International Union of Free Journalists has been initiated

The Republic of Moldova has initiated the process of creating a new public structure aimed at protecting the interests and rights of the journalistic community, as well as assistance in the implementation of professional projects and initiatives — the International Union of Free Journalists.
According to a number of journalists, bloggers, experts in the field of SMM and other fields, both from the Republic of Moldova and from outside the Republic, as well as readers of top media and users of social networks who have come up with this initiative, today those who have common sense and an objective point of view on the development of events in the world need to unite efforts to defend their right to freedom of speech, opinion and expression in public space, the Eurasianews portal reports.

It is assumed that the International Union of Free Journalists in its activities will be aimed primarily at protecting journalists from arbitrariness and harassment, including by government agencies.

According to many residents of Moldova and other countries, taking into account current events in the republic and the region as a whole, the formation of this organization, which will ensure the protection of the rights and values of media workers recognized internationally, in particular in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations, is timely and relevant.

The initiative group also plans to create an Expert Council within the organization, which will include experts in various fields — law, economics, public administration, anti—corruption, information technology and multimedia, publishing, etc. The task of the Expert Council is to provide comprehensive professional support to the members of the International Union.

During the preliminary discussions, the initiative group, which included journalists and bloggers from Moldova, Russia, Israel, Belarus, the USA, Armenia, Azerbaijan and other countries, decided to nominate a well-known journalist in Moldova and abroad, editor of the Gagauznews portal and author of the project "Accidental correspondent of" Nikolay Kostyrkin.

Nikolay Kostyrkin was born in 1985 in Chisinau, where he still lives. Journalist, writer, author of the project "Accidental Correspondent" since 2018, editor of Gagauznews since 2021, where, in particular, he leads the author's online project "Union Indestructible". He worked and collaborated with the editorial offices of Novosti-Moldova, Sputnik Moldova, Notepad-Moldova, Arguments and Facts in Moldova, the Moldovan branch of the Izborsk Club, a frequent guest on the News-front TV channel.

In June 2022, Nikolai Kostyrkin was detained for several hours, after conducting a search in the apartment where he lives, and charged under articles of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova "Incitement to discord" and "Call to war." As previously reported by the media, the charges were based on alleged publications on his author's TG channel "Nikolai Kostyrkin - The Bessarabian Armageddon", where he expressed support for a special military operation to denazify and demilitarize Ukraine, as well as for close cooperation between Russia and Moldova.
