An open letter to the Moldovan authorities

To the President of Moldova Maia Sandu

To the Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Rechan

To the Speaker of the Parliament, Chairman of the Action and Solidarity Party Igor Grosu

An open letter

Dear sirs!

The Organizing Committee of the International Union of Free Journalists, drawing your attention to the provocative statements by the Ukrainian side about the Kremlin's allegedly known "plans" to "seize power" in Moldova, calls on you to condemn this rhetoric against Moldova.

The Moldovan journalistic community is convinced that the words of representatives of official Kiev are pure provocation and an attempt to draw Moldova into a military conflict in Ukraine. Among other things, this is an attempt to play the card of legitimizing the persecution in Moldova of those who are critical of the current government in Moldova. Although this kind of criticism fits perfectly into the norms of democracy and pluralism of opinions, the foundations of a modern civilized society.

We regret to note that the discourse of the political force you represent is based on the desire to declare as "agents of the Kremlin" all those who are critical of the actions of the president, the government and the ruling majority in Parliament. We believe that this is being done in order to confuse the cards in the eyes of the general world community and disguise the observed failures in foreign and domestic policy with the "machinations of the Kremlin" and other political cliches.

In order to reassure the public, which seems absolutely necessary in this situation, you should immediately initiate negotiations with the Russian Federation and offer to sign documents in one form or another that will guarantee non-aggression and an exclusively peaceful solution to any existing problems in relations with the Russian Federation.

Such a document will calm public opinion and convince the population that you are really doing everything possible to prevent war. Otherwise, if such an initiative is not shown, the public will consider that such rhetoric from the authorities of the Republic of Moldova is being deliberately escalated, and it is obvious that they are going to spend huge amounts of national budget money on the purchase of Western weapons for military provocation and destabilization of the situation in the region, but not for "common protection", but also, to divert people's attention from the ever-increasing socio-economic problems.

Public opinion polls available online show that the overwhelming majority of the Moldovan population is opposed to the current state of affairs in the country, and this has nothing to do with the geopolitical views of the population. We are convinced that numerous arrests will soon be carried out under the slogans of "fighting Kremlin agents", and citizens will be pressured, intimidated, and summoned to "conversations" with competent authorities - in short, freedom of expression will be suppressed.

We believe that all these actions will lead to a total genocide of the Moldovan people and urge you to abandon your intention to sacrifice the people of Moldova to your own political ambitions. We count on your prudence and responsibility to the people of the country you lead.
