The IUFJ appealed to the UN Secretary General in connection with the persecution of the media in Moldova

The International Union of Free Journalists (IUFJ) has sent an official appeal to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, expressing extreme concern about the repression of the media in Moldova.
According to the IUFJ, the persecution of journalists, TV channels, editorial offices of electronic portals, etc. is gaining momentum every year the PAS party is in power – for example, twelve TV channels have been closed in Moldova over the past year, not to mention such "little things" as websites that close them literally "in batches".

"The International Union of Free Journalists notes with regret that the norms of freedom of speech necessary for building a democratic society are completely flouted by the current government of the Republic of Moldova. In this country, the intensity of repression against the media is constantly increasing. If in 2012 the only opposition channel in Moldova, NIT, was closed, then in 2022-2023 the regime ruling in Moldova closed no less than 12 TV channels, whose editorial policy ran counter to the odious and sometimes reckless statements of the country's leadership," reads the message of the IUFJ.

It is also noted that the problem lies not only in the ban on the activities of the media, but also in the pressure exerted on representatives of the mass media and completely does not fit into the "democratic values" postulated by the PAS party.

"The repression against freedom of speech is not limited to television alone. At the suggestion of the country's top leadership, law enforcement agencies are ordering the blocking of many websites of local and foreign editorial offices – dozens of these illegal measures have already been taken. The closure of the sites was preceded by pressure on journalists and media executives. Methods such as intimidation and searches were used. Moldova has become a sad example of how the government, cajoled by European and American politicians who do not want to notice censorship, violation of human rights and freedom to disseminate information, is arrogant, engaged in information genocide and introduces completely fascist orders," the IUFJ said in a letter to the UN Secretary General.

The International Union of Free Journalists has called on the UN leadership, represented by Guterres, to actively interfere in such a course of things in order to preserve at least some prestige and trust in the values of a civilization that calls itself the most advanced on the planet.

"The Moldovan population is becoming increasingly disillusioned with its rashly chosen course of Euro-Atlantic integration, transferring this disappointment to structures providing international support, including the UN. Bearing in mind that freedom of access to information, freedom of opinion and political views was a commitment made by the Republic of Moldova upon joining the UN, we ask you to speak out on this issue and condemn attempts to establish total information censorship in Moldova, an invariable companion of any dictatorship," the IUFJ statement concludes.

In January 2024, the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova ordered the blocking of several dozen information and analytical portals registered in the Republic of Moldova and in Russia on the territory of Moldova.
