The Organizing Committee of the International Union of Free Journalists has published and sent an open letter to President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilica, Speaker of Parliament Igor Gross and the Commission on Emergency Situations. The letter expresses condemnation of the closure of six TV channels in Moldova, the repression of the Russian language and the legacy of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
On Friday, December 16, the Moldovan Commission for Emergency Situations in the Field of energy, bypassing the country's Broadcasting Council, closed six national television channels, the information content of which does not fit into the mainstream a priori anti-Russian, Russophobic and Sovietophobic agenda artificially created by the authorities.
- The closure of six TV channels violates the rights of Moldovan citizens to access information. In addition, according to our data, about 1,000 people were left without work overnight, they cannot feed their families or pay for utilities, especially considering that the television media market in Moldova is very limited. Highly qualified specialists are effectively deprived of the opportunity to find a job in their specialty, which will lead to increased tension in their families, and eventually to discord and suffering," the open letter says.
- We believe that your very ambiguous view of the current events in Ukraine absolutely does not justify the intention to make the public agenda in the Republic of Moldova one-sided and devoid of alternatives. The statement by Moldovan President Maia Sandu about the need for the Information and Security Service to investigate the fact that a concert was held in Balti in honor of the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Red Army over the Fascist Reich and the Romanian army allied to it at Stalingrad causes great concern. The Moldovan president, in her own words, voiced on TV, was outraged by the fact that the children participating in the concert were dressed in replicas of military uniforms from the Great Patriotic War. Maya Sandu stated that she considers this fact "propaganda of war," said Nikolai Kostyrkin, coordinator of the Organizing Committee of the International Union of Free Journalists.
- It should be noted that commemorative events dedicated to the Victory of the Soviet people over the universal evil, fascism, are not "propaganda of war", but propaganda of a Feat on a universal scale, as well as another reminder of how pernicious fascism is and that it will definitely be defeated in the end. We are not surprised by such rhetoric from Ms. Sandu, recalling her ambiguous opinion about the leader of fascist Romania, Ion Antonescu, whom she called "a historical figure, with good and bad deeds." We believe that the odious position of one individual cannot become the basis of state policy," the letter from the IUFJ Organizing Committee says.
Russian Russians also expressed indignation that the new Election Code excludes the obligation to print ballots in Russian, which violates the rights of about 40% of Moldovan citizens who think and/or speak Russian most often.
- Dear sirs! We are convinced that such actions lead to the degradation of the Republic of Moldova and to the complete moral exhaustion of the society of this country, especially since these are certainly not the last steps in this direction. We are afraid that the last remnants of the opposition press will be crushed in this way. In addition, we fear that the Russian language, culture, mentality, as well as our common heritage, historical and spiritual, will soon be obstructed, which will turn Moldova into a rogue state," the letter says.
