The international journalistic community calls on Lithuania to stop the persecution of Paleckis
The Organizing Committee of the International Union of Free Journalists has addressed an open letter to Lithuanian President Gilthanas Nauseda, Prime Minister Ingrid Simonite and Speaker of the Seimas Viktoria Chmilita-Nielsen. It contains a request to end the political persecution of opposition leader Algirdas Paleckis and release him from prison. About this RuBaltic.Ru said the coordinator of the organization, Nikolai Kostyrkin.
According to him, Paleckis is in prison on trumped-up charges of "espionage."
"The essence of the accusation boils down to Paleckis' personal assessments, who has an alternative point of view on some events from Lithuania's history, as well as on its current political situation, and does not hide them, which fully fits into the spirit of journalism and democracy. We are deeply convinced that the persecution that Paleckis has been subjected to for many years is related to his point of view, which differs from the official interpretation of certain events. And a person's personal views a priori cannot serve as a basis for his persecution in the 21st century, in the world of democracy and law," Kostyrkin said.

In an open letter from the organizing committee of the International Union of Free Journalists, it is emphasized that the Lithuanian authorities, expressing their absolute commitment to the values of democracy, cannot trample on them themselves. "As we have learned, the conditions of Paleckis' detention in prison are far from generally accepted norms, especially for a country that has declared itself a developed democracy. Paleckis is being deprived of the medicines he needs, denied access to doctors and the services of a lawyer. We ask you to double—check this information and take all appropriate measures immediately," the document says.
